What is the process for adding an icon to Watson?
To add a new icon to the Watson design system, follow our standard process to ensure it's compatible with the existing library. First, you'll need to prepare the icon file by ensuring it meets our technical specifications for sizing and adheres to our naming conventions. Once the icon is ready, you'll hand it off to the engineering team. They will then integrate it into the necessary repositories, making it available for use across all our products.
For a detailed step-by-step guide on this process, including asset preparation and the handoff procedure, please refer to our Icon Guide. It also provides best practices for preparing and submitting any component to the system for faster consumption.
I'm building something new. Should I use UI Kit or Watson?
When building new products or features, the overarching guideline is to default to the Watson design system. As of Q1 2026 we are no longer supporting UI Kit.
Can I pitch an idea for a new component or pattern?
Yes! We absolutely encourage all designers and engineers to contribute to the Watson design system.
Watson is a collaborative resource, and its strength and continued relevance depend on the contributions and feedback from the teams who use it every day. Whether you have an idea for a new component, a reusable pattern, or an improvement to an existing element, we want to hear from you.
See our contribution guidelines for more information!
